What's missing with Maize and Blue basketball?

As the Wolverines get ready for the Buckeyes, let's examine them a little closer. Michigan is 6-6, the offense hasn't clicked as one for any stretch of games and the defense gives up too many uncontested shots. Last year, the Wolves were 11-2 heading into the new year with victories over UCLA and Duke. Like this year, they lost their Big Ten opener (to Wisconsin). They followed that loss with 3 straight wins over Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
What's different about this year's squad? Shouldn't this team be better? Another year of experience. Manny's back. DeShawn Sims is back and the two young freshmen, Novak and Douglass both have a year under their belt. Seems like they should be playing better. However, maybe we should look at what they lost in the off-season. David Merritt, C.J. Lee, Kelvin Grady and Jevohn Sheperd. OK, well that doesn't sound like much but if you look a bit deeper, it might explain a few things. Grady could do several things including putting pressure on the other team's defense with his quickness pushing the ball up the floor. His quickness also helped on defense, getting to 3-point shooters. They had to at least worry about his quick hands stealing the ball. When you look at the other three, it's true you don't lose much on offense BUT their defense, leadership and energy are hard to replace. Four bench players, on and off, who gave their energy each and every time they took the court.
What's missing on this year's team? The bench play the Wolverines had last year. And you never thought you'd miss guys like C.J. Lee and David Merritt.
